If you're a diabetic, are you able to lower your risk of heart disease?

You may have been wondering if it's even possible to ward off certain diseases when your body is already trying to manage one like diabetes. But the answer is: yes! There are many things you can do that will keep your body fit and healthy so that your chances of developing ailments like heart disease will be greatly diminished.

Understanding heart disease
Being a leading cause of death in both men and women in America, heart disease is something to take very seriously. Having diabetes already puts you at a higher risk for heart disease, which is why you need to be proactive and take preventative measures to ensure your health.

Being diabetic
As a person with diabetes, you're used to taking care of your health in a certain way, but are you doing enough? Managing your sugar and insulin levels can be a lot to handle, and you need to make sure that you're providing your body with the best nutrition possible. You also need to manage your weight and stay physically active in order to stay in a healthy range.

Lowering your risk
Proper nutrition is crucial! You know you should eat better, but which foods should you eat more of and which should you avoid? For heart health, go for rich fruits and vegetables as well as lean meat or fish instead of red meat. Smoking should also be avoided for general health reasons, but especially for a diabetic or someone with heart issues.

Take charge of your health! If you would like to know more, sign up for our Diabetes Self-Management workshop, which starts Monday, July 15. The six week long program will cover managing your symptoms, exercise, healthy eating, medications and working with health care providers.
